At WJ Interests, we pride ourselves on not just providing financial planning services in the Houston area, but also building strong, personal connections with our clients. We believe that understanding the personal experiences and backgrounds of our advisors can help you connect with them. Today, we’re spotlighting one of our dedicated financial advisors, Mateo Salmeron, CFP®, as he shares his recent trip to Spain.
This past spring, my wife and I embarked on an adventure to Andalusia, the southern region of Spain. We managed to snag pretty good deals on airfare and thought it would be a great opportunity to explore more of my culture together. We specifically visited the cities of Granada and Almeria, where most of my family lives in the country. Each city offered a unique blend of culture, history, and unforgettable experiences. Here is what we experienced so you too can explore the beauty of southern Spain.
Granada
We started our journey in the city of Granada, located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Granada is known for its rich history and fantastic cuisine. One of the foundations of Spanish culture is the Alhambra, a palace and fortress complex that was built in the mid-1200s. The Alhambra offers intricate palaces and architecture, lush gardens, and truly transports visitors back in time. Availability is a key thing to keep in mind if you wish to visit, as the city of Granada limits the number of daily visitors to help preserve the landmark.
Beyond the Alhambra, Granada has a lot more to offer. The tapas culture is a lot of fun to experience. If you go to a restaurant, there should be a section on the menu pointing out appetizers called “tapas.” When you order a tapa at a restaurant, you often get a free glass of wine, beer, or another drink they have specifically laid out. It’s part of the culture to always enjoy a drink with a tapa. We also had the opportunity to see a live tango performance and visit many other landmarks.
Our next stop was Almeria, a coastal city known for its beaches and festivals. We were fortunate to receive a full tour of the city from one of my family members. We were able to see the Alcazaba, a fort located on the outskirts of town that offered fantastic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the city itself. We also attended a celebration in the city plaza, where the Valencian population was celebrating their culture. Almeria also has its own version of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, as the city was used for many cinema classics like “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” I would definitely recommend seeing these sights for yourself if given the opportunity.
